Digital transformation is something that everybody wants to achieve, but not everyone can define. It is the latest in buzzwords but maybe we can learn from the past to help deliver the business of the future.

Let’s face it, using the latest technology to drive business transformation is nothing new. The invention of the steam engine in conjunction with social, political and cultural changes led to the industrial revolution. The steam engine playing a major part in improving transportation whilst also driving the productivity of factories and mining.

Electrification then followed. Initially, the benefits were slow to be realised. To take advantage of electricity, factory owners had to think differently. Replacing a steam engine with one large electric motor did not provide the productivity gains promised. It wasn’t until entire working practices and process were changed; factories organised into production lines that the full benefits of electrification were felt.

Of course, the industrial revolution was not without its problems. The rising popularity of automated equipment, threating the jobs and livelihoods of skilled workers gave rise to the ‘Machine Breakers’ and the Luddite movement.

The parallels between history and modern-day digital transformation are clear.

The latest digital technologies are revolutionising entire industries. Just as the steam engine and electricity drove the industrial revolution, artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), cloud computing and other ‘disruptive’ technologies are creating opportunities for employees to work, customers to engage and business to thrive in new ways.

New working methods such as DevOps, Agile businesses and empowerment of the workforce help to realise the productivity gains promised by the new technologies. As seen in the 18th Century, there is clear worry that technologies such as AI and Machine Learning will have a profound impact on jobs, discouraging employees from adopting new and more efficient tools.

While we are in the midst of very exciting technological revolution, let’s learn from history, to truly realise the benefits we must reach beyond the technology, ease employee concerns and transform the business as a whole.
